Salt, Drugs & Rock and Roll

It feels like forever since I have posted an episode, and that’s because it has been. After a lot of digging around… and waiting… and reading, here’s episode 8: Salt, Drugs & Rock and Roll.

I figured that sounded better that Salt, Lies and Videotape.

This is the story of how ostarine, a drug designed to treat muscle wasting diseases that was never fully tested and is not currently approved for therapeutic use in any country started showing up in pro triathletes’ drug test results, led to a lawsuit, and caused the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to issue an athlete alert about ostarine contamination in dietary supplements.

Dr. Jonathan Toker provides some perspective on the risks, for age groupers, of dietary supplements contaminated with ostarine. In addition to being the president of Toker Engineering, the company that markets SaltStick supplements, he’s the science editor at Slowtwitch, holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry and has experience in the biotech and dietary supplement industries. He’s clearly a guy who knows what he’s talking about and he’s been very vocal about how Salt Stick ensures its products are free of banned substances.

I talk about the resources USADA has created, including the Reduce Your Risk Checklist infographic and the Supplement411 website, to help athletes avoid high-risk and potentially tainted supplements.

This episode also has a lighter side as we talk about my first Zwift run, The Cyclist Pod – a cycling podcast so funny the people at my gym hate me, and why right now is the perfect time to rate and review this podcast on iTunes or Google Play.

Stop reading this and press play.

  1. Interesting that Hammer and Base didn’t reply to your inquiries. Maybe I need to get an undergrad working on some third party testing…
